Round 13 Improving Search Engine Discoverability for the current Ocean Data Marketplace

Name of Project
Improving Search Engine Discoverability for the current Ocean Data Marketplace

Proposal in one sentence
Improving Search Engine Discoverability for the current Ocean Data Marketplace in order to easily find datasets and algorithms that have been published in main net or in bespoke Data Marketplaces that other teams have developed.

Description of the project and what problem is it solving
Our customers have told us that they were not able to find our published datasets using various search engines and as a result of follow up conversations with them, we have identified a need to improve the discovery of the datasets and algorithms on the current Data Marketplace. We believe that by improving the SEO of the marketplace, we can enable more growth, uptake, and discovery of not just our datasets but also the other great teams that have published either data or algorithms on the marketplace.

Grant Deliverables
Grant Deliverable 1: Modify Aquarius to provide a properly formatted site map in XML automatically for all assets that are not in purgatory, and will be ordered by ascending order by created date.

Grant Deliverable 2: If the marketplace is in development mode, it will not be indexed so that other search engines will not find the marketplace.

Grant Deliverable 3: Do a PR for the Marketplace and Aquarius.

Grant Deliverable 4: Create documentation on the implementation of our solution to Aquarius to help other teams create their own site map for their own marketplace and increase discoverability by other search engines.

These deliverables will be completed within 4-5 weeks if this proposal is approved.

Which category best describes your project?
Build / improve core Ocean software

What is the final product?

  1. Open-source code that will enable any development team to create a properly formatted site map using the Site Map protocol (https://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html) via XML. This site map will allow for search engines to crawl these datasets and algorithms either on the main net (https://market.oceanprotocol.com/) or on bespoke data marketplaces that other teams have built.

  2. Modify the page meta-data of the marketplace to increase discoverability

  3. Just like our previous DAO proposal, all of the code will be open-source and free to use and we will also be available to provide help to any team that reaches out to us.

Here are possible “value add” criteria
Right now as we have experienced with our own customers, they were not able to find our datasets or algorithms and one customer even became hesitant to use our professional services because they couldn’t understand why our datasets could not be found when they search for them via Google. As a result, we think that this proposal will have a high positive impact on all of the teams developing on the marketplace or have created their own bespoke Data Marketplaces. Our customers are not in the “crypto” space and hence to gain more adoption and revenue we want to reduce that friction and make it easier for them to publish data sets or use algorithms.

Viability
Very high since we have over 40 years of development experience between the team members of mPowered.

Community active-ness
While we do not do a lot of postings on social media channels, mostly because we are developers and not social media influencers, we have contributed greatly within the community. Our CTO Corrie is active on discord and has helped out many other people in terms of providing guidance and also identified bugs. We have also acted as paid consultants for teams within the Ocean Community and have customers using our platform outside of the Ocean Community.

In terms of active GitHub contributions, we have the following instances where we have found bugs or made recommendations/enhancements:

We have also done a PR on our last DAO (Local Network Egress Traffic Improvements to the Kubernetes configuration for Compute-to-data)

We also created a video which development teams can use for reference for this proposal in Round 7. Video

Adding value to the overall community — how well does the outcome of the project add value to the Ocean community / ecosystem

We think that we will add a lot of value to the Ocean Community by developing this code. It will allow companies who don’t know about Ocean Protocol and the great tools that have been built to be discovered and used. Secondly, it will also expand the reach of the other great teams building on Ocean Ecosystem to be discovered by traditional brick and mortar companies. Our customers are not within the “crypto” Community, our customers outside of that box and are traditional brick and mortar companies who want to monetize the data that they have or use AI/ML companies to analyze their data while preserving their privacy by using C2D.

Part 2 - Team
We are the team behind Transport Genie, an award winning IoT company that has created bespoke sensors from scratch that monitors local environmental conditions as livestock are in transit. We have pivoted to mPowered because we have seen the vast potential of Ocean Protocol because of what they have been building.

Joel Sotomayor: Co-Founder of mPowered
A serial entrepreneur who has already exited 2 companies, owns multiple patents (in 10 countries), 2 trade-marks, and multiple innovation awards in Canada and Australia. When he isn’t writing code, he is often hanging out with his Uber smart GF or talking to Corrie. Like most developers, he likes predictable results, loves to study pattern-behaviours relationships, has lots of quirks and quarks, and enjoys music but has 2 left feet when he dances.

Corre Sloot: Co-Founder of mPowered
Senior Full-Stack developer and has been involved with Blockchain since 2009 (he was a Satoshi-Era miner). He has undergraduate degrees in Physics and Computer Science and Joel thinks he is one of the smartest guys that he has ever met. He also loves cURL

3.9 Project Deliverables - Roadmap
Any prior work completed thus far? Details?
No

What is the project roadmap? That is: what are key milestones, and the target date for each milestone.

All of these deliverables will be completed within 4-5 weeks once we get approval from the DAO and we will update our work using port.oceanprotocol.com

What is the team’s future plans and intentions? Is there maintenance? Possible extensions to the work?
We would like to continue to build open-source tooling to help expand the adoption of these great technologies that Ocean has created.

3.10 Additional Information
Any additional information to add? E.g. custom fields or images? E.g. other grants or fundraising to date?

Right now when you use site:market.oceanprotocol.com there are no results, if our DAO proposal is approved, users will be able to see of all the datasets and algorithms published that are not in purgatory and will well also order the results in ascending order based on creation date. We think by allowing search engines to crawl this site, we can expose all of the great work that the teams have been building on the Ocean Tech stack and create more adoption and drive more business revenue.
