VORN and OCEAN data integration - Round 14

Part 1 - Proposal Submission (*Mandatory)

Name of Project:
VORN and OCEAN data integration

Proposal in one sentence: Publish VORN member biometric data to the Ocean market place and integration of the Ocean wallet into our app

Description of the project and what problem is it solving:
VORN wearable intelligence supports personal health and precise monitoring with our Core + Aerial + Motion wearables. Data analysis is done by internally developed algorithms and AI models. Data privacy, value and ownership are a top priority for us and part of our identity. Data control needs to be exclusively with the user.

The following video explains the VORN ecosystem in 1.5 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAC4u1nQVrM

Problem:
We now need to build a marketplace where data has value and can be securely exchanged and Ocean Protocol is our preferred platform.

Solution:
By integrating Oceans’ preexisting wallet and marketplace into VORN’s App we can offer our clients access to a true peer-to-peer blockchain-enabled data economy with:

  • the ability to trade and exchange their biometric data gathered by our devices
  • a marketplace that is secure and offers full control of data privacy

Grant Deliverables: (Provide us with a check-boxed list of deliverables for the funding provided.)

Which category best describes your project?

  • Build / improve applications or integrations to Ocean

Are you applying for an Earmark? Pick one.

  • General

Which Fundamental Metric best describes your project?

  • Data Consume Volume

What is the final product?:
At the completion of this project, after three finished funding rounds, Ocean Protocol will be integrated into the VORN system.

Transactions between VORN customers who wish to sell their data and organizations who wish to run their algorithms and calculations on that data will be completed via Ocean Protocol.

How does this project drive value to the “fundamental metric” (listed above) and the overall Ocean ecosystem? This is best expressed as Expected ROI, details here .

The overall wearables market has doubled since 2014, making it one of the most successful consumer electronics markets in the last 5 years. In 2019, the global market for wearables was valued at USD 32.63 billion and USD 40.65 billion in 2020. It is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.8% from 2021 to 2028.

The number of connected wearable devices worldwide has more than doubled in three years, rising from 325 million in 2016 to 722 million in 2019. By early 2020, about one in five Americans was already using a smart watch or fitness tracker.

Assuming, after the three finished funding rounds and completed Ocean integration into the VORN system, we can capture 0.001% of the market, we will have 7,220 devices on the market with the same number of users. These users will be able to purchase training programs from professional athletes for $29.90 per month, which equates to an annual value of $358.80. If we assume that we sell the training plan to 1% of our customers (72 customers), the training plans will generate a value of 72 x $358.8=$25,833.60 within the first year.

In addition, customers have the opportunity to sell and get paid for their biometric data for research purposes. For these research projects, customers will receive about $100 per project, and each project will run for about one month. Since this is the sale of personal data, we assume a lower willingness to participate than for the purchase of training programs. Therefore, we assume that 0.5% of our customers will participate: $100 per project x 12 months x 36 people = $43,200.00.

Thus, within one year of market entry, approximately $25,833.60+$43,200.00= $69,033.60 will be transacted using the Ocean Protocol built into VORN.

Bang (first year after market entry) = $25,833.60+$43,200.00= $69,033.60

Buck (for the three founding rounds)= $3,000.00+$10,000.00+$20,000.00=$33,000.00

(% chance of success) = 70%

The conservative estimated ROI after finishing the three founding rounds and in the first year on the market = 69,033.60/ 33,000.00* 0.7 = 1.46

This is above the expected ROI of 1.0.

Funding Requested: USD 10.000$ (applying for second time)

Overview of the technology stack:

Project Deliverables - Roadmap

Any prior work completed thus far?

YES:
  1. Business Plan
  2. Hardware and firmware development are already in progress
  3. App mockup is available
  4. Textile development for cycling is finished
  5. 1st funding round finished
    Deliverable 1: Biometric data measurement
  • We built our 3rd shirt prototype for gathering biometric data in December.
  • This model comes with new electrodes that are thicker than the previous ones thus we assume they provide improved data quality. This assumption will be tested during the 2nd funding round.
  • Additional change to the prototype is that now we integrated the silicon sensors on the front instead of on the back. This improvement allows us to use our shirt in additional sports categories like running, rowing, and cross-country skiing as well as cycling.
Deliverable 2: Building algorithms for data analysis
  • Our goal was to develop algorithms for visualizing the BPM and HRV that we gathered with the newly developed shirts.
  • Our current ECG is visible on the following graphic. The QRS complex is already recognizable but needs further improvement to allow us to measure more precisely the heart under stress scenarios.

  • (theoretical QRS complex)

  • Recording and analyzing a full training session is possible but there was at the beginning a large amount of noise included.
  • After improving the algorithms, we could decrease the number of data outliers and noise:
  • We will work on further improvements of the algorithm to decrease the extremes entirely.

What is the project roadmap? That is: what are key milestones, and the target date for each milestone.

2nd funding round (THIS SUBMISSION):

January & February 2022

  • Data set collection for professional and semi-professional athletes
    • VORN Core & Textile testing with athletes
    • Data collection during sport
  • Data cleaning and analysis
    • Sorting out data records
    • Improving algorithms for optimized data analysis

3rd funding round:

From March 2022

  • Ocean Wallet integration into VORN App
    • Building the ability to trade and exchange biometric data gathered by our devices
    • Integrating a marketplace that is secure and offers full control of data privacy

Future Plans:

  • 3rd party collaboration to enable high-grade encryption
  • Motion sensor development
  • CE certification of our Core

OCEAN X VORN Slide Deck

Hi @VornSwiss ,

Thank you for submitting your proposal for R-14!

I am a Project-Guiding Member and have assigned myself to help you.

I have reviewed your proposal and would like to thank you for your participation inside of the Ocean Ecosystem!

Your project looks promising and I believe it’s aligned with our evaluation criteria of generating positive value towards the Ocean Ecosystem and the W3SL.

The project criteria are:

  1. Usage of Ocean — how well might the project drive usage of Ocean? The VORN team have an impressive product in the making and are targeting a large TAM. By integrating Ocean into the VORN app it puts Ocean at the center of VORN’s data marketplace and will help drive usage of OCEAN.
  2. Viability — what is the chance of success of the project? The team have been building VORN for a while now and are just getting familiar with the Ocean ecosystem (second grant) but they have already delivered 2 POCs of their wearable product and doing market validation.
  3. Community active-ness — how active is the team in the community? As this is only VORN’s second proposal they are still new to community. I would suggest reaching out and saying hi to the community in #ocean-dao and sharing your proposal so more people can become aware of the work you’re doing. It could also be worth connecting with the team from LYNX as you both may benefit from some form of collaboration & be looking to overcome some of the same technical challenges.
  4. Adding value to the community — how well does the outcome of the project add value to the overall Ocean community / ecosystem? This is a good test of a real world use case for Ocean Protocol and Ocean Market and one which is using sensitive data but within an industry where people are already familiar/comfortable with sharing their data e.g. Garmin etc. If successful VORN could pave the way for a new vertical inside the Ocean ecosystem.

Based on the reasons above, I am in support of your project and proposal. I look forward to continuing providing support and feedback to your project.

All the best!
