Athena Equity brings previously unavailable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data to the Ocean marketplace through an end-to-end decentralized hardware and software solution.
Description, what problem is it meant to solve:

Companies with a large datasets naturally do not wish to be the first mover. Web 2 business models are built around hoarding valuable data in a winner-take-all competition. No matter the immediate financial benefits, this presents a fundamental challenge. In addition, the Ocean protocol compute-to-data is a new advancement in technology. Enterprises and governments will be hesitant to test it with their own data. It may be difficult to find providers with a broadly demanded data set to attract this reluctant group.
Environmental Social Governance (ESG) assets are projected to be worth 50 trillion dollars by 2025. The current ESG marketplace is composed of assets backed by nothing more than self-reported figures, with loose, un-standardized reporting regulations. This lack of reporting leaves vast demand for verifying environmental, public health, and governance data that cannot be met in a scalable or cost-effective manner by Web 2 implementations.
The amount of information sent over IoT networks is set to skyrocket over the next few years. This industry needs decentralized technology solutions. Considering the youth of the network technology and current trends towards wide-scale adoption, from agriculture to where you can find parking, these budding industries are willing to explore new innovative solutions. This makes them the perfect candidates to be on-boarded to Web3 technologies.
Athena will serve as a first-mover in data monetization and highlight the superior business model of Web 3. Athena Equity will also accelerate the adoption of compute-to-data by creating a broadly demanded data set of ESG data. Enterprises, governments, and individuals all desire environmental data to understand the pace of climate change. The opportunity to access granular ESG data will bring various entities to run computations on Ocean protocol for the first time.
[ Outreach ]
The concepts we in the ocean community are strongly familiar with, such as the nature of data centralization, the value of aggregate data, and the clear benefits of an open data marketplace in society, are still largely foreign to most people. Ocean Protocol needs consistent, high-quality content to spread education and awareness about the problems it seeks to solve. Not only this, but concentrated effort to recruit and onboard new developers, data scientists, and software engineers. Athena plans to perpetuate all of this and more through a three-month strategic marketing effort culminating in Ocean Protocols participation in DevSpace 2022.

Grant Deliverable’s:
These deliverable’s will be returned to the Ocean community over two grant rounds and two months. The funds are requested in advance to obtain hardware materials and ensure the project’s scope.
[Unleash Data]
We will establish a POC in the Denver Area to confirm Athena’s ability to record ESG data over a decentralized server. This POC will be conducted over two months. We will only seek additional funding for R15 if the below deliverable’s are completed early, and there is a clear additional use case.
- Helium Driven Data Transfer
- Athena will deploy hotspot’s and connect them to the network

- Environmental Monitoring ( Soil & Air )
- Athena will attach environmental IoT sensors to the deployed hotspot. We will test to confirm the data is being transmitted over the network.

- Testing Video Over LoRoWAN
- We will purchase a video sensor to test the feasibility of sending video images over LoRoWAN with the long term goal of facilitating the creation of AI ready image datasets.

- Publishing Environmental Monitoring Data Asset To Ocean
- Athena will post a sample set of the record environmental data as an end-to-end proof of concept. On a go-forward basis, this dataset will be updated as long as sensors remain in place

[Core Technology]
Our project has secured mentorship and collaboration from a team of highly experienced go-ipfs engineers most recently responsible for the Qri.cloud project referenced in our in-depth reporting from R13. We will be working closely with their team to find which parts of their code can be repurposed for use for decentralized storage with Ocean. See our report from R13 here for more on IPFS and its limitations. We have identified several key technologies that may offer suitable solutions, including the Ceramic Network, Arweave, and even an ocean protocol integrated IPFS cluster. Further research and testing are needed to determine the best course of action.

[Outreach]
Payment and Preparation for Diamond level Sponsorship at DevSpace 2022. This event’s hackathons draw an average of 1,000 developers each year, with thousands more participating in workshops, talks, and events. Taking ocean protocol to this event will require several weeks of planning and coordination, and the Athena project is only asking for the amount to secure the sponsorship. It’s an excellent opportunity to onboard new users and developers to Ocean Protocol and its marketplaces.

Final Product:
Athena will establish itself as an out-of-the-box solution for recording and monetizing ESG data. Data collection will be transmitted over a decentralized wireless network and stored on decentralized storage. We have already identified and established conversations with key infrastructure providers related to access control, user database management, and fiat on-off ramps.
Value Added:
Athena Equity’s goal is to become an early major driver of Data Consume Volume for the Ocean community.
Our product has immediate business value and demand with ESG already surpassing $35T in 2020 and projected to reach $50T by 2025. In addition, the expansion of decentralized wireless coverage already has a standalone and viable enterprise and consumer market. Athena Equity will be able to piggyback onto this market to expand real-world use cases of the data economy rapidly.

- Viability: The project is now in a far more organized position. We have established Athena LLC as a legal US entity. Tim Carter now has Christian Casazza to act as a co-founder, allowing Athena to dedicate specialized focus to the tech and business sides, respectively. In addition, we have two dedicated and experienced contributing members as well as an MoU with Helium Inc. who has agreed to work closely with our project to ensure its success.

Which Ocean-powered data market will data be published on?
We plan to publish our data directly to the Ocean Marketplace as well as partner with relevant marketplaces in the ESG data and overall climate space. Athena’s goal is to increase both data publication, and data consumption in the long term and will work to host its data assets wherever with OCEAN partners whenever possible.
