Name of Project:
Ocean Protocol - Nigeria Community Building
Proposal in one sentence:
Managing community channels, educating new network participants, promoting the Ocean ecosystem, media and online communication outreaches, translations and sharing information (materials), focused majorly on the Nigerian Community.
Description of the project and what problem is it solving:
Why Africa and Nigeria?
-
Over the past year, Africa has been widely reported as one of the fastest-growing markets for cryptocurrency adoption.
-
The African crypto market has grown by over 1,200% in terms of value received over the past year. Chainalysis estimates that African countries collectively received around $105.6 billion worth of cryptocurrency between July 2020 and June 2021.
-
This trend shows an important report which attributes the fast growth rate to grass root adoption. Although the growth has been progressive, the demographics shows a huge market that can be unlocked with localization of the concept in these un(under)served regions. This will greatly unlock opportunity for the rest of the Blockchain sector and for us, this is where we see Ocean positioning, considering the huge data deficit on the continent which goes to show the impact Ocean has in the region.
-
Nigeria on the other hand is the second largest bitcoin market on Paxful (the largest P2P exchange in the world), Kenya No. 8 and South Africa, No. 10. With this massive adoption we intend to pilot our effort here, creating translations of all ocean blog posts, white papers, business papers and social media posts and podcasts to the 3 major languages in Nigeria (Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa). We will go a step further to create media content and seminars that educate and onboard new members into Ocean in these areas.
-
With the country, we are targeting a huge market size. To put it into perspective, Africa is the second-most-populous continent in the world, with around 1.3 billion people, with reports claiming the continent’s population will more than double by 2050. However with the unstable governance, infrastructure deficit, civil wars and instability, the financial sector has largely remained less accessible which has subsequently led to over half of the population staying unbanked.
-
More so, the collection, management and utilization of data on the continent has also suffered setbacks owing to similar crises that moribund the financial sector.
-
However, this challenges on the one hand constitute provi less, on the one hand can be seen as huge market opportunities for unleashing data, blockchain technology as as solution for financial crises and making it the next big hub blockchain adoption

What is the project roadmap? That is: what are key milestones, and the target date for each milestone.
Continuous translation of new blog articles as fast as possible. Continuous daily translation of the official Ocean Protocol social media channels. Organize seminars, hackathons and events in institutions of higher learning to create more awareness about OCEAN protocol and Blockchain adoption generally. The intention is to spread awareness, educate and on-board new people that will keep growing the community.
Please include the team’s future plans and intentions.
Strategic Partnerships: Partnerships with key stakeholders like universities, NGOs, Data centers, innovation hubs, grass-root corporatives etc. Our immediate focus is to develop these partnership networks in Nigeria and then Africa at large.
Ecosystem Building: We will get involved in the local ecosystem by running or sponsoring local meetups, event sponsorships, hackathons and language boot-camps to reach more people. Our primary market here is the African Market where we have local access.
Ocean Ambassadors in Nigeria: people who are genuinely interested in the product and willing to spread the word for us.
