Name of Project:
Ocean Protocol - Nigeria Community Building
Proposal in one sentence:
Managing community channels, educating new network participants, promoting the Ocean ecosystem, media and online communication outreaches, translations and sharing information (materials), focused majorly on the Nigerian Community.
Description of the project and what problem is it solving?
Please you can reference the document below to see the detailed description or explanation with proper links to the work done so far
An overview of the approach we use to promote Ocean protocol ecosystem in Nigeria can be seen in the screenshot below:
We intend to create massive awareness, we will identify the interested people through their desires, which will eventually be onboarded to the ecosystem either as Data Curators, Market participants, or software developers, the diagram below shows a more detailed steps on our approach towards the ocean protocol brand awareness:
Acquisition: is the initial process of creating awareness through different channels like social media (facebook, twitter, instagram), hosting hackathon and events etc…
Activation and Retention: we keep on working to engage the people who have showed the desires by continually translating the ocean blog posts, hosting different ocean protocol universities events to educate and demonstrate how Ocean data market operate, introduce Ocean DOA, Ocean DOA’s ecosystem including the different projects building on Ocean, etc.
Revenue and Referral: Revenue for us is to successfully on board new network members either data curators or software developers, have more ocean wallets created, and have users continually refer other users to the network.
So far, we introduce Nigerians to Ocean through twitter, telegram and our blog subscribers by communicating with them in their native languages. Ocean protocol has officially posted 53 articles in their medium channel, we translated 48 out of the articles into Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa, which makes a total of 144 articles as of today, the links to the article can be found on substack.
We keep growing the blog site visitors, twitter page and instagram page monthly, the growth rate as of now for
Twitter: 1012 followers with 489 tweets
Instagram followers: 1785 followers
Blog site followers: 732 new subscribers
Local telegram members: 273 members
While we have around 3200 social media followers across twitter, instagram and telegram, translated over 140 articles into the native languages with around 700 email subscribers, we intend to take the awareness to the next level by hosting Blockchain Ocean Protocol Events in Nigerian Universities because:
-
The university contains scholars who we can easily onboard such as software developers, data curators, market participants.
-
With the diversity of students / people in the Universities, Ocean protocol news / awareness can easily spread leading to a ripple effect that will lead to referrals.
-
We can easily use the campus resources and partner with the universities student union and the university blockchain clubs to make the event more successful and spread the word.
With this said, we intend to host these events monthly in different universities and higher institutions in Nigeria throughout the year starting with the State University of Lagos, Nigeria on January 25th 2022.
Grant Deliverables: (Provide us with a check-boxed list of deliverables for the funding provided.)
-
Hold a blockchain event in the University of Lagos, Nigeria focused on introducing Ocean protocol, with the objectives to:
-
Get an attendance of at least 1000 at the event both online and onground as it would be an hybrid event with some speakers on ground and some remotely.
-
Encourage to create at least 100 Ocean wallets from event participants.
-
Increase the number of followers on Ocean social media handles by at least 500
-
Demonstrate how Ocean data market operate, introduce Ocean DOA, Ocean DOA’s ecosystem including the different projects building on Ocean, encourage more students to join Ocean protocol academy.
-
Empower the event participants with the required blockchain skill sets that will help them stand out, thereafter, encourage them to join the Ocean Academy.
-
Foster long term relationships among partnering organisations for other highly scalable projects on Ocean.
-
-
We will translate 68 articles which will be published on Ocean Nigeria blog, this will include translating the 5 newly created blogs in Ocean official medium into Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo, then we will translate the previously created 53 articles into Pidgin English (a widely spoken language in Nigeria).
Which category best describes your project? Pick one.
Outreach / community / spread awareness.
Which Fundamental Metric best describes your project? Pick one.
Market WAU (Weekly market participants in Ocean Market or across all data markets)
What is the final product?:
We are building a platform that Powers Communities and gives them the Opportunities to learn and unlock value.
We will host an information website with a content curation and translation section for OCEAN materials.
How does this project drive value to the “fundamental metric” (listed above) and the overall Ocean ecosystem? This is best expressed as Expected ROI, details here.
- Bang (Value Added) : 35,000
- Buck (Grant) : $13, 893
- % (Chance of Success) : 85%
- = 2.14
Note: Bang (Value Added) is measured with the following formula: (Website Visitors + Facebook Followers + Twitter Followers + Substack subscribers + telegram) * 0.85
Funding Requested: $13, 893
As our proposal for this month has two key separate deliverables.
- Translation of a total of 68 articles and growing the social media handles, our primary module of translations will be International language to National/Local dialect. We will apply one of these pricing models in paying our translators - Per word, Per line, Per page, Per hour, Flat fee, Minimum price & Customised.
There are some others factors that shape the price of translation service to suit an individual project, such as:
- Complexity of the subject matter
- Language combination
- Discount for ongoing commitment with a client looking for partnership based on a consistent volume of work
- Quicker turnaround time for translation service demands a higher rush fee
- Proofreading
- Revisions
- Transacriptions before translations
The budget for this is $3, 500.
- The budget for the event includes renting event hall space, speakers, mics, internet, logistics, publicity and awareness, swags which include event flyers and banners, souvenirs, customised t-shirts, rewards and prices for event participants.
The budget for this is $ 10, 393.
Please visit the sheet below to get a detailed overview of the budget for the event.

What is the project roadmap? That is: what are key milestones, and the target date for each milestone.
Continuous translation of new blog articles as fast as possible. Continuous daily translation of the official Ocean Protocol social media channels. Organize seminars, hackathons and events in institutions of higher learning to create more awareness about OCEAN protocol and Blockchain adoption generally. The intention is to spread awareness, educate and on-board new people that will keep growing the community.
Please include the team’s future plans and intentions.
Strategic Partnerships: Partnerships with key stakeholders like universities, NGOs, Data centers, innovation hubs, grass-root corporatives etc. Our immediate focus is to develop these partnership networks in Nigeria and then Africa at large.
Ecosystem Building: We will get involved in the local ecosystem by running or sponsoring local meetups, event sponsorships, hackathons and language boot-camps to reach more people. Our primary market here is the African Market where we have local access.
Ocean Ambassadors in Nigeria: people who are genuinely interested in the product and willing to spread the word for us.
Why Africa and Nigeria?
-
Over the past year, Africa has been widely reported as one of the fastest-growing markets for cryptocurrency adoption.
-
The African crypto market has grown by over 1,200% in terms of value received over the past year. Chainalysis estimates that African countries collectively received around $105.6 billion worth of cryptocurrency between July 2020 and June 2021.
-
This trend shows an important report which attributes the fast growth rate to grass root adoption. Although the growth has been progressive, the demographics shows a huge market that can be unlocked with localization of the concept in these un(under)served regions. This will greatly unlock opportunity for the rest of the Blockchain sector and for us, this is where we see Ocean positioning, considering the huge data deficit on the continent which goes to show the impact Ocean has in the region.
-
Nigeria on the other hand is the second largest bitcoin market on Paxful (the largest P2P exchange in the world), Kenya No. 8 and South Africa, No. 10. With this massive adoption we intend to pilot our effort here, creating translations of all ocean blog posts, white papers, business papers and social media posts and podcasts to the 3 major languages in Nigeria (Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa). We will go a step further to create media content and seminars that educate and onboard new members into Ocean in these areas.
-
With the country, we are targeting a huge market size. To put it into perspective, Africa is the second-most-populous continent in the world, with around 1.3 billion people, with reports claiming the continent’s population will more than double by 2050. However with the unstable governance, infrastructure deficit, civil wars and instability, the financial sector has largely remained less accessible which has subsequently led to over half of the population staying unbanked.
-
More so, the collection, management and utilization of data on the continent has also suffered setbacks owing to similar crises that moribund the financial sector.
-
However, this challenges on the one hand constitute provi less, on the one hand can be seen as huge market opportunities for unleashing data, blockchain technology as as solution for financial crises and making it the next big hub blockchain adoption
